A memorial fund has been set up for a Sacramento State student who died in Monday evening’s two-car accident on eastbound Highway 50 near the 59th Street exit.
Members of ASI opened a memorial account fund in order to help the victim’s family with funeral costs and other expenses related to the tragedy, said Art Pimentel, executive vice president of ASI.
Yuritzy Alvarez, a 19-year-old criminal justice major, died in a car collision Monday evening. Alvarez worked part-time doing clerical work at the College Assistance Migrant Program. CAMP helps students from migrant and seasonal farm worker backgrounds attend college.
CAMP friends said Alvarez was on her way home from her boyfriend’s house Monday night when her silver 1987 Nissan Stanza hit the center divider on eastbound Hwy 50 near the 59th street exit.
According to California Highway Patrol Officer Nick Salmeron, .Corey Beaulieu, 18, of Sacramento hit Alvarez’s disabled vehicle, rupturing the fuel tank and causing both vehicles to catch fire. Both vehicles came to a rest in the center divider, Salmeron said.
Beaulieu was transferred with moderate injuries to UC Davis Medical Center after being pulled from his 1988 black Chevrolet Blazer by witnesses, Salmeron said.
The impact of the two vehicles along with the fire had fused them together making it impossible to tell if there was anyone else in the Nissan.
“We’re now trying to do a vehicle inspection,” he said.
Alvarez was raised in Santa Maria, California and was first in her family to go to college, Marcos Sanchez, Director of College Assistance Migrant Program, said. He said she was hoping to work as a peace officer when she was done with school.
“She was a dedicated and committed student,” Sanchez said. “She always had a smile on her face.”
He said Alvarez’s sister, a senior in high school, was here two months ago, picking up an application. “I don’t know if she’ll come here now,” Sanchez said.
The South Sacramento CHP is asking witnesses of the first collision, the Nissan Stanza hitting the guardrail to call: 681-2300.
Contributions to the Yuritzy Alvarez Memorial Fund should be sent to the Associated Students of CSUS, 6000 J St., Sacramento, CA 95819-6011. Make checks payable to The Yurizty Alvarez memorial fund, account # 03995, or call CAMP at (916) 278-7241.
