Volleyball falls to UOP

“Get there, get there, SWING!” cried Jayme Wright, as team captain Sarah Chlebana spiked the ball into Tiger territory.

The Sac State volleyball team worked hard to hang with the No. 14 team in the nation, the University of Pacific Tigers, but the crowd of 503 that turned up at Hornet Gym saw the Tigers sweep past the Hornets in three games.

As the Hornets jumped out to a 9-5 lead in the first game, the Sac State crowd was lively. The band was in full swing and the cheerleaders kept the people excited. But the Tigers scored 10 of the next 11 points and went on to win 15-10.

Hornet coach Debby Colberg had mixed feelings on her team’s performance.

“We were passing erratically, and we tend to lose confidence,” Colberg said. “But aggressively it was a good match.”

In the second game the crowd hushed a bit but kept up their spirits against the vast amount of orange clad supporters in the opposite stands. The Tigers led from the first serve to the game winning point as the Hornets rallied from a seven-point deficit to get within 13-12, before the Tiger’s Elaine Goeders served two aces to end the game.

“Our passing, blocking and our talking was not there,” said junior Tasman Dwyer.

“Not everybody was mentally prepared to battle out there.”

In game three, the Hornets took a 2-0 lead before the Tigers cranked out the next six points to take a 6-2 lead. The two teams rallied hard for the win, but the Tigers never relinquished the lead and won 15-9, snapping the Hornets’ three-match winning streak.

“The little things pulled us apart, I don’t know if it’s maturity or if some (of the Hornets) were intimidated,” Dwyer said. “But not everyone showed up to do battle tonight.”

Sac State finishes off its five-match homestretch on Thursday as it hosts Cal State Northridge at 7 p.m. in Hornet Gym. The team closes its week at Idaho State on Saturday.
