The Hive: A traditional sports bar
October 3, 2000
Sacramento State?s The Hive, an on-campus sports bar, complete with 17 televisions and beer on tap, offers a fun atmosphere at a small price.
Located on the first floor of the University Union, The Hive is a comfortable hangout where one can eat, drink and get rowdy while watching sporting events, or what ever else the TVs may be tuned to. Sacramento State memorabilia and general sports collectibles complete the traditional sports bar ambiance.
As the volume in the restaurant can get pretty loud, it is recommended to save studying for the quaint outdoor patio. While planters and trellises accent this study ha-ven, four concrete walls encompass the area, helping to keep surrounding area noises down to a minimum.
Aside from being one of the few spots on campus to offer alcoholic beverages, the atmosphere is by far the best part about the joint. The food is nothing short of?well, let?s just say mediocre.
Selections from a broad menu include hot dogs (starting at $1.50), spicy buffalo chicken wings ($4.25), popcorn shrimp ($4.25), chili ($1.89 and $2.49) and calzones ($4.90). On a recent visit, I passed up a sad looking slice of pizza, which could be viewed through the warmer, for a batch of stale Nachos Grande ($4.50).
On a more positive note, the cooks know how to put together a tasty hot sandwich ($4.50). Sandwich choices include roasted chicken breast, roast beef and pastrami on a French roll or eight-grain bread.
Also, the “Spuds-A-Roastin” bar is appealing. One may purchase a baked potato for $1.95 and then choose from a variety of toppings at $.35 each. Options include shredded jack and cheddar cheese, grilled onions and broccoli.
With The Hive being a sports bar, I must mention the beverage options–one may choose from a variety of draft and bottled beers ranging from $2.25 to $3.25. Choices include everything from Samuel Adams and Budweiser. For the more conservative drinker, a glass of wine can be purchased for $3.25.
The serious student who does not want to stumble into class feeling a little tipsy may opt to sip on a large variety of non-alcoholic beverages, including soda, coffee, tea and bottled juices.
While lines appear shorter at the Hive compared with other eateries on campus, the service isn?t exactly prompt.
Don’t despair though, this just leaves more time to kick back, relax, and have a good time chatting with friends and rooting for your favorite team.
