A night at Pine Cove
October 24, 2000
The Pine Cove Tavern, a neighborhood pub since 1953, is a popular college nightspot commonly known for being “a cool dive.” The Pine Cove has a reputation for it?s cheap drinks, good conversation and ten TVs all turned to sports. The Pine Cove is conveniently close to Sacramento State and located in the heart of Midtown.
The steep staircase that leads to the bar can be a little overwhelming knowing that you are probably going to have to make a drunken stumble down after all those drinks. And those drinks will be tempting. The Pine Cove runs different mixed drink and shot specials, ranging from $1 to $3, almost every night. The nine beers on tap range from $1 to $2.75, for a ten-ounce glass, depending on whether you prefer Pabst Blue Ribbon or Ace Pear Cidar. For only $5 a pitcher, Pabst is the ideal drink for a beer drinker on a budget.
The crowd is diverse. You can see sports buffs yelling at the TV, and at the same time, hear a group of friends discussing modern philosophy at the table behind. While a few suits may be dispersed in the crowd, the atmosphere is definitely casual. The bar is primarily populated by those in fraternities and sororities on Friday and Saturday nights.
The bar itself is a casual and comfortable setting with a gas fireplace, plenty of marble-topped tables, dark wood and large windows overlooking E street. The lighting is dim, misleading the beer goggles to believe that everyone looks like a supermodel the further you get into the night.
You?ll find popcorn peppering the floor of the bar. Popcorn, a snack that goes hand-in-hand with beer, is free.
After 9 p.m. there?s a hot dog vendor downstairs on the street corner. According to regulars, “you haven?t lived until you?ve tried a Pine Cove hot dog.”
Unbeatable drink specials, a comfortable environment, and access to snacks that satisfy the munchies, make The Pine Cove Tavern a perfect place for a college student to eat, drink and be merry.
