Sacramento State women’s soccer was eliminated from conference tournament contention today in a 3-1 loss against Portland State.

“It was really a rough and ugly game,” said Sac State head coach Randy Dedini.

The Vikings scored once in the first half and two in the second, but the Hornets would get their goal during the 19th minute of the second half as well.

The Hornets put a ball into the box before it was kicked about 17 yards out to senior forward Elece McBride for a finish into the upper corner of the goal.

The last goal made by the Vikings came in the 25th minute of the second half.

Dedini said the Vikings delivered how they wanted to and their forwards made some good plays.

“I think they did a good job understanding how they wanted to play and executing,” Dedini said.

Each team was also dealt a yellow card to one player. For the Hornets it was senior forward Jordan Carlberg on the receiving end.

Senior goalkeeper Shelby Tomasello finished the game with six saves and three goals against her.

Dedini said the loss was disappointing because the Hornets pride and the love of soccer were on the line.

“I think we need to just get back to playing good soccer, keeping the ball on the ground, keep it moving and to try to expose San Jose’s back line,” Dedini said. “Hopefully this game will help us with that game.”

The Hornets will face off against San Jose State on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Spartan Soccer Field.
