Campus back in business

University restrooms were reopened Tuesday at approximately 3:30 p.m. after being shut down for three hours because of a sewer malfunction in Sacramento. Ann Reed, vice president of university affairs, confirmed reopening of the restrooms at campus-wide.

“Everything is back online and we have checked out the whole system on the campus,” Reed said.

All of the restrooms on campus were closed shortly after noon due to a sewage problem in the city.

In an effort to cope with the sewage problems off campus, President Donald Gerth cancelled all classes until 4 p.m. Tuesday.

The sewage problem was caused by some kind of blockage in the main sewer line located near Elvas Avenue and the railroad tracks, according to Donald Tucker, assistant director of operations for the University Union.

Reed said she could recall other times where the entire campus has been closed due to extenuating circumstances.

“The campus closed in the 1980?s because of a pending flood situation,” Reed said.

“Another time, when the temperature reached 117 degrees, we closed the campus.”

But there have situations where portions of the campus have been temporarily closed. “We have had power outages where individual supervisors were allowed to determine whether or not it would be productive for employees to remain [on campus],” according to Reed.
