Students stay on trend with a budget

Burgundy, emerald green and mustard yellow are colors that are in style for the upcoming fall fashion, according to fashion magazines like Vogue and Vanity Fair.
There is no better time to reinvent or even mix up a wardrobe than the back to school season, which happens to coincide with when the new fall trends roll out.
Many stores have already taken the ideas off the fall runways and converted them into buyer-friendly products.
Students like first year biology major Deana Ramos like to shop at Forever 21, H&M and American Apparel, where clothes are affordable and are up to date with the current trends.
“Usually I look for whatever is in season. If it’s fall, for example, I look for a lot of autumn colors… I tend to stick with browns, grays, dark greens,” Ramos said.
There are many ways to save money while shopping, including window and thrift store shopping.
“Normally I go in-store to see what they have, I compare those prices to what’s online, and usually I wait for a sale but I always compare prices online and in-store before I buy anything,” Ramos said.
Simply knowing what you want might also help when shopping, said junior speech pathology major Alina Yemchuk.
“I don’t really go with a budget, but I know my limit. I try to go in knowing what I need and try to look for the deals and the sales,” Yemchuk said.
As for colors for this fall, burgundy is not a stranger to the fall season. It has been a leading color in stores like Forever 21 and even Victoria’s Secret for the past couple years and can be worn from head to toe.
“I’m obsessed with it, so I don’t think so,” said Yemchuk when asked if she thought the burgundy color had been overdone. “I think it’s a great color. It’s one of those that you can never go wrong with, I have burgundy scarves and knit sweaters and pants, jeggings, they are just so cute.”
Emerald green or any shade of dark green, has also become a recent favorite, more common among coats and jackets such as the parka.
Student shoppers find that they don’t have to go very far to acquire a dark green sweater or T-shirt.
“I have a couple of T-shirts [from The Hornet Bookstore] but now that it’s getting colder I want to get a sweatshirt and other things,” Yemchuk said.
Not only do the dark colors and cozy crewneck jackets keep everyone warm and in style, but they also showcase school spirit.
The newest fall color is mustard yellow, which does not sound appealing but has quickly become a favorite among young fashionistas.
“I usually hate yellow, I used to really not like yellow, but I kinda like it now,” said first year Kinesiology major Sequoia Woodard. Woodward admits she likes the mustard yellow a lot more now that she sees a lot more people wearing it.
“Normally I wear [mustard yellow] with accessory pieces, so like a jacket, [as] more of a statement piece than an overall color,” Ramos said.
It is not necessary to buy a bunch of new mustard or green shirts or skirts just because they are the latest trend. Instead, shoppers should decide if it is a color they would like to stick to during the remainder of the season.
If a certain top or bottom seems desirable, a good rule of thumb would be to go back and check if it matches with another item already at home.
Think: is this trend something that will fade soon?
“I don’t like to overdue it with anything… definitely just a few things because then if I’m over it I don’t want to have a bunch of things laying around that I don’t wear,” Yemchuk said.
