Editor’s note: The State Hornet endorsement panel was headed by Editor in Chief Nate Miller, News Assistant Editor Josh Staab and Co-Opinion Editor Jordan Guinn. The panel endorsed one candidate from each executive position. ASI beat writer Jacqueline Tualla was not involved in the endorsement process.

The three editors interviewed 14 of the 17 candidates. The State Hornet budgeted 20 to 25 minutes for candidates for president, 15 to 20 minutes executive candidates and 10 minutes for director candidates. Each candidate was also e-mailed a questionnaire.

The State Hornet endorsed candidates in all positions, including those where only one candidate was running. Additionally, we redflagged some candidates.

The following are answers to a questionnaire sent out to all candidates running for positions within Associated Students Inc.

Do you have any current leadership positions with Associated Students, Inc.? If so, what is that position?

Yes, I currently hold the elected position of Director for the College of Arts and Letters and also I serve as a board member for CSSA (California State Student Association).

Why did you decide to run for this position?

I have seen both positive and negative events happening on our campus. Positive being the great advancement we have begun to explore with new buildings, a recent Doctorate program and increased events on campus for students to attend. Negative being our purposed “Vote of no confidence” that has been deliberated over by our faculty for the past year, our CFA possible strike for faculty (postponed as long as the contracted is carried out as agreed upon) and internal budget concerns expressed by both faculty and students. All of these factors contributed to my decision to run for ASI President along with my passion for our CSU Sacramento campus community and my desire to continue to see our campus advance. I would serve students effectively, be visible.

What makes you qualified for this position?

Aside from my experience as a current board member, and as a CSSA (California State Student Association) board member: I love my university. I care about students. I desire to see the student interest representative.

What relevant experience do you have that makes you qualified for this position? This year as I sat on the ASI Board of Directors as the Director for Arts and Letters and was appointed to the California State Student Association Board of Directors, I made a difference by proposing legislation in support of the student interest and unity on campus. My qualifications and experience range on many different levels, from working with the students in the College of Arts and Letters to leading state wide groups on various campus issues like Academic Advising and lobbying on behalf of those issues.

Additionally, I have a copy of this years accomplishments thus far which I would be happy to provide you with. It is a three page bullet point summary with some of my accomplishments.

What is your platform for the 2007-08 year if you become ASI president?

As ASI President I would most definitely carry out my presidential candidate platform which is: “For a Safer, Greener, Unified Campus!” This means we on the VISION Team want our students to be as safe as possible on the Sac State campus, we want our campus to be a sustainable campus which contributes to our environment, as opposed to taking away from it, and we want our ENTIRE campus united for student rights!

Additionally, any platform the ASI Board (07/08) would follow would need to be approved by the new incoming board before it is put into action. What will be your top priority (one thing) if you are elected?

STUDENTS are always my top priority! What the students want is what I want. This means all issues effecting students would be number one on the priority list.

Specifically, what legislation will you pursue once elected and how will this directly impact students?

I would propose and bring forward legislation regarding sustainability, safety and issues regarding the state of our campus community. I would like the board to take a stand on some of these time sensitive issues, as well as controversial. Some of these issues include the recent “Vote of No Confidence” for President Gonzalez, student and faculty concerns regarding our Sac State budget, student fees and class sizes.

By Associated Students Board of Directors taking a stand on issues, students are able to see transparency as well as direction. If students know where their student leaders stand on issues, they are able to find confidence and reassurance in their representation. This is one way legislation directly impacts students. Additionally, while legislation is passed there needs to be action behind the vote. Legislation will directly impact students in the 07/08 academic year because Associated Students Board of Directors will be working on follow through with legislation passed, if I am elected president.
