November 12, 2003
It’s that time of year again when Jill Pable’sinterior design students wind up their semester project – aclock.
Their assignments turn into the “Tick Tock ClockShow,” a creative merging of interior design and art. Theshow will be on display in the Lighting Gallery of 4000 MariposaHall starting Thursday and running through Nov. 20.
The show, now in its third year, is a project for 40 students inPable’s Introduction to Interior Design class, in which eachstudent is to create a working clock based on functional andartistic criteria.
“It’s always exciting because you have 40 different expressionsall ticking and making quite a racket,” Pable said.
It is designed to help the students understand and appreciatethe field of design, prepare them for work they will encounter intheir careers and pay homage to legends in the field of design.
Each student was instructed to research a “hero;” aknown figure in the world of interior design or architecture. Thesefigures include the likes of architect Frank Gehry, interiordesigner Dorothy Draper, the architectural firm Gensler, and manyothers.
“The project is worthwhile for students to understand a”great’ is in our field and give their work a newexpression,” Pable said.
The students then studied their philosophy, approach tofunctionality and use of materials.
Then they created a clock that captures all of these elements inan eloquent and artistic fashion. The students are required to haveboth an aesthetic and feasible grasp of their project in order tomeet their desired goal.
The results of this project for these students is a grade, butfor other Sacramento State students, it is an opportunity to see anexhibition of artistic creations from their peers.
“They vary in design and composition, and turn the whole idea oftelling time upside down.”
The eight-day show will culminate in a reception from 12:45 a.m.to 1:45 p.m. on November 20, providing visitors free appetizer anda chance to meet the artists and discuss their projects.
