RPTA Students create clothing drive to benefit domestic violence prevention charity
November 12, 2015
The WEAVE clothing drive was held in the University Union on Nov. 5, as part of a Recreation Parks and Tourism Administration 136 Event Programming class.
Brenna Howler, a Sacramento State recreation parks and tourism administration major and Melissa Daciuk, a Sac State recreation therapy major, hosted the event.
“As part of our RPTA 136 class we had to put on an event,” Howler said. “We chose to go with WEAVE because it serves men, women and children.”
The students are tasked with creating an event from start to finish and also creating a manual so the event can be recreated.
“We had to show how we marketed, gathered volunteers and the running of the event,” Daciuk said, “This manual is going to be read by our professor and they should be able to match this program exactly.”
Students, faculty and staff were able to donate clothes for Daciuk and Howler’s drive throughout the event.
“I am donating today because we are supposed to help our fellow man, we’re a community we’re not against each other, we’re for each other,” Zion Lewis, Sac State deaf studies major, said.
All the clothing collected will be donated to WEAVE.
WEAVE is the primary provider of crisis intervention services for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault in Sacramento. The WEAVE organization strives to build a community that does not tolerate domestic violence and sexual assault and provides survivors with the support they need to be safe and thrive.
The clothing collected by this drive helps WEAVEWorks Recycled Fashion is a retail store that supports WEAVE. Clients of WEAVE get free clothing and proceeds from anything sold supports the WEAVE program.
