Clubs on campus celebrate spring
March 30, 2015
The Indian Student Association and Pakistani Student Association helped students kick off spring break by hosting their first joint color festival event called Rang De Duniya, or Color The World, on March 20.
Although there were mostly students in attendance, everyone was welcome to join in on the fun. Participants followed upbeat tunes that a DJ was playing in the grass area directly in front of The WELL.
An entrance fee of $14 was required, unless students bought $10 presale tickets. A ticket purchased one admission entry, a T-shirt representing ISA or PSA, henna tattoos, and two bags of rang (colored powder) two additional bags costed participants $1.
“We tried to make it as affordable as we can for Sac State students. You come in, spend around $20 bucks, and have a great time,” said third year business major and PSA president Ahmed Zia.
Funds will be allocated to both organizations and will go towards future events, such as cultural shows and a kite festival.
Though Holi was internationally celebrated earlier in the month, the ISA and PSA presidents wanted to celebrate the festival of colors during the last day before spring break.
“We wanted to celebrate the last day of midterms and the start off spring break with Holi,” said third year business major and ISA president Ekjot Kaur. “It’s a great way to unite everyone on campus,”
The festival had a live DJ, water fights, a slip-n-slide and flying colors.
The presidents of both student organizations encourage people to join their clubs and attend future events, no matter what ethnicity they are in.
ISA is currently trying to start Sacramento State’s Bhangra dance team. They will be having tryouts on April 6 and 7. If interested, join the ISA Facebook page for further details.
“A lot of schools in this area already have a Bhangra team, which is a type of Indian dance,” said second year nursing major and ISA technical director Neha Nagra. “It’s related to hip-hop and folk dance. We used to have [a] Bhangra team maybe 5 or 10 years ago […] and we’re trying to restart that up. It’s weird for any school in this area to not have a Bhangra team because this area in Sacramento has the most Sikhs.”
PSA is currently working on hosting a kite festival event with details to follow.
“Next year, we hope to have a lot of support so we can have this event for free because we want everyone at Sac State to feel like they can come and celebrate this awesome Indian tradition…It’s about spreading love and colors and starting spring with happiness and joy,” Nagra said.
