Sac City Rollers hold bout in University Union
November 2, 2012
The Sac City Rollers derby team came to play a free bout in the University Union Ballroom Thursday in hopes of creating awareness of the sport, and to also draw in a younger crowd.
The Capitol Punishers played the Folsom Prison Bruisers in a grueling match, pitting the Sac City Rollers league members against each other.
“Aliethal Weapon,” who normally plays pivot for the Capital Punishers and coached the team tonight, said she believes they played a good, close game and hopes students would want to get more involved.
“The point of tonight’s game was to have fun and introduce a new crowd to roller derby, a younger crowd,” Weapon said. “Hopefully, we achieved that goal and made some new fans. Our next game is Nov. 17 at the rink off Bradshaw. We’ll be playing the Venture Vendolls.”
“Motormouth,” the coach for the Folsom Prison Bruisers, said he enjoyed the game, and hopes it made an impression on the crowd as well.
“It was a good hard-fought battle, both teams played very well,” said Motormouth. “Being able to put it on here at Sac State was really cool, maybe we can get a new recruits and spread the love of derby.”
Christina Fomby, a senior photography major, volunteers for the Sac City Rollers in her spare time because she has many friends on the team and loves to watch them play together.
“It’s fun to watch. Its exciting, even when they fall, hearing the crowd roar,” said Fomby. “I like coming to watch my coworker and the girls that I’m starting to get to know. It’s fun to watch them work hard and have fun.”
Both teams played a close game, with a lot of speed, teamwork, and the occasional devastating fall that was received by the crowd with gasps and cheers. The Folsom Prison Bruisers came out on top in the end, with cheers from both sides and many congratulations.
