Hot hitting continues for Hornets as they sweep Badgers

The University of Wisconsin’s softball team traveled to Shea Stadium Wednesday looking to leave with at least a split in its doubleheader with the Sacramento State Hornets on Wednesday. But the Hornets were rude hosts to the Badgers, sweeping the series. In the first game of the twin bill Kayla Meeks took the circle, pitching six innings and allowing six runs, but she had the Hornet batting order in her corner. Sac State scored eight runs to help her get the win. Izmena Cabrera, the team’s left fielder, had a perfect day at the plate and accounted for half of the teams runs. In the third inning Cabrera showed off her power swing, hitting a two-run homer that cleared the wall in left center. Rachel Miles, playing for the injured Sherry Clark at third base, went 1-for-3 at the plate and had two RBIs. Badger starting pitcher Letty Olivarez only lasted four and a third innings. Olivarez was knocked around for 10 hits, seven runs and gave up three walks. Hoping to rebound, the Badgers sent Leah Vanevenhoven to the circle, but she wouldn’t last more than two full innings. Vanevenhoven was pulled after only one plus innings of work, allowing three earned runs off of one hit. The Hornets scored all five of their runs in the first two innings of the game, which was more than starter Megan Schaeffer needed to shut the door on a Badger team that mustered only one hit. Schaefer earned her third win of the season. Sac State returns to action at 1 p.m. on Friday at Shea Stadium as it takes on the University of Pacific in a doubleheader.
