Students under time crunch for spring fees

Many Sacramento State students received their invitations toregister within days of their scheduled tuition pay date.

Spring semester invitations were mailed out on Nov. 11. Thefirst students to register &- graduating seniors and prioritystudents &- were supposed to pay their fees by Nov. 17.

“Ideally we want students to receive their invitations toregister two weeks before their scheduled date,” saidRegistrar Anita Hall.

Students may register anytime after their original scheduleddate, so a late payment does not preclude registration, accordingto

admissions and records.

“A student who has not paid by his/her scheduled datecannot register until the payment is receipted and posted to thecomputer,” Hall said.

The office of admissions and records prints the timeline forregistration in the front of the schedule of classes

“We do try to prepare people in advance,” Hallsaid.

Registration dates and fees are scheduled on a rolling basisstarting with priority students and graduating seniors andfinishing with sophomores, allowing invitations to be mailed in onebulk order and reach students simultaneously.

“It is a financial benefit to mail all the invitations atthe same time and it has the same effect,” Hall said.

Many campuses in the California State University system use abilling program. This allows students to register for the classesthey need without having to scramble to pay tuition at the lastminute.

However, if a student fails to pay their fees, they are droppedfrom the class.

The software currently in use at Sac State is not set up tohandle a billing program and has had the same registration processin place since 1993.

With the arrival of the PeopleSoft’s Common ManagementSystem, a CSU-wide record-keeping software, all campuses areexpected to fall in line with the billing method.

After the first of the year there will be meetings about how toimplement this software and adapt it to Sac State, Hall said.
