Fox brings college-age humor with “The Loop”
January 6, 2007
There are some laugh-out-loud moments in FOX’s new sitcom “The Loop,” however, the show seems like it’s reaching for something and hasn’t quite hit its potential yet. Although The premise is certainly relatable enough.
The show follows fresh-out-of-college Sam (Bret Harrison) at his new job as the youngest executive for TA Airlines. Everyone calls the kid ‘thesis’ because he was hired because of his, well, you get the idea.
Sam lives with his older brother (Eric Christian Olsen), and two women, one of whom happens to be his longtime crush Piper (Amanda Loncar).
It’s up to Sam to balance his newfound responsibilities as an executive and still find time to have fun and pursue his romance with Piper.
In the pilot episode, fun gets Sam in trouble when he passes out drunk on his floor and his brother shaves a piece of his hair off, right before his presentation for the airlines.
Funny? Of course. Believable? Not likely. Didn’t Sam realize a chunk of his hair was missing before he got to the office, like when he was in the shower that morning maybe?
Many of the laughs in the sitcom have trouble toeing the line between comical and plausible.
In the second episode “Jack Air,” Sam gets in trouble on a flight for shaking his pedometer under his blanket when it’s mistaken for masturbation. Wouldn’t a simple “I’m an executive for the airline, look it’s a pedometer” explanation rid our hero of his worries?
The show is called “The Loop” presumably for the text that comes on the screen to fill in the blank spots for the viewer. It starts off funny enough, as one rude guy at the bar is introduced with an off-color phrase in parenthesis for his debut. But in the second episode the gimmick gets boring already and there’s not much left to fill that void.
“The Loop” is a show that is still finding itself and will possibly, with sharper writing, find success. Until then, it’s just one dull joke after another that’s reminiscent of hearing a joke you already know, then filling in the punch line for the person telling it.
“The Loop” premieres Wednesday March 15 at 9:30pm after American Idol on Fox.
