Shannon Roland recorded her first career double-double and the Hornets opened 2005 with a 3-1 (30-19, 30-26, 28-30, 30-17) over Rhode Island at the Mizuno Classic on Friday afternoon at the Walter Pyramid in Long Beach.
The junior outside hitter had 13 kills and 12 digs, putting her second on the team in both categories behind fellow juniors Atlee Hubbard (15 kills) and Kristin Lutes (15 digs). Sophomore middle Lindsay Haupt, last year’s Big Sky Freshman of the Year, led all players with nine blocks and paced a dominant Sac State front which out-blocked the Blackbirds 20-12.
Hubbard also notched a double-double, adding 11 digs as well as three blocks.
The Hornets dominated game one, allowing Long Island just seven kills on 38 attacks and forcing eight errors. Sac State hit .357 in winning game two to take a 2-0 lead into the break.
Long Island came out of the mandatory break with their best game of the match in game three, hitting .286 and limiting the Hornets to a .128 hitting percentage. Sac State came back to close the match in convincing fashion in game three, holding Long Island to just 17 points on 11 kills.
The Blackbirds edged Sac State in the digs column, 71-65 and committed only 10 service errors to the Hornets’ 12.
Sac State freshman setter Rose Burke had a stellar debut in the Green and Gold, dishing out 53 assists, recording three service aces and assisting on four blocks.
The Hornets return to the court tomorrow to face a pair of national powerhouses. Sac State squares off with No. 19 San Diego at 1 p.m. and tournament host, No. 24 Long Beach State at 7 p.m. to close the tourney. All three of Sac State’s opponents this weekend played in the NCAA tournament last year, with San Diego reaching the Sweet 16.
Lawrence, Siller seal Causeway victorySacramento State women’s soccer started the season off right with a 1-0 victory over archrival UC Davis.
Senior defender Mandi Siller rustled the net with a goal in the 36th minute off an assist from fellow senior Linda Sanchez. The scoring play started when sophomore forward Katie McCoy angled a corner kick from the left side. Sanchez then volleyed the ball off the crossbar which made the ball bounce behind Davis goalie Krystyn Lizak who had come out to try and retrieve the ball. Siller, who was positioned behind the goalie, then deposited the ball in the net when it bounced her way.
Sac State freshman goalkeeper Jennifer Lawrence saved the game with less than a minute to play when she collided with a Davis forward to squash what could have been the tying goal.
The victory earns Sac State five points in the Causeway Cup, the all-sports trophy awarded to the winner of the most head-to-head match-ups between the two universities.
