Sacramento County inspectors found violations in campusrestaurants such as cross contamination of foods, improper foodstorage and an unclean ice machine, while some workers were notedfor not washing their hands. Overall, the Environmental ManagementDepartment did not find any major violations.
With approximately 31 food establishments at Sacramento State, the department helps to keep students informed about how sanitaryeach business prepares the dishes they serve to customers.
The department is charged with inspecting restaurants in theSacramento area. They offer a Web site,www.foodinspect.saccounty.net, which lists many of the restaurantslocated at Sac State. Throughout the year, inspections are made atthe university to ensure that proper food safety measures are beingmet. The department usually visits each restaurant about once ayear, but starting in July businesses will start being checkedevery semester.
A recent tour of some Sac State restaurants found that a fewplaces were not posting their inspection reports. Kung FuFat’s and Gordito Burrito were among some of the businessesthat did not have their inspection findings posted. A request toview Kung Fu Fat’s inspection report was denied by themanager on duty.
Businesses that serve food to the public are required to posttheir inspection reports in a visible area within theestablishment.
“As a customer or as a student you should be able to viewthat information,” said Kelly McCoy, a supervisor for theenvironmental management department.
Business owners and employees are never notified as to when aninspector will arrive to make a report. Inspectors are also rotatedto cover different establishments. This helps to ensure that thepossibility of a close bond occurring between the county employeeand business owners will not occur.
La Creperie, located at both Sac State and UC Davis, was notedfor having unclean storage selves. Business owner Michel Bloch hasowned the small French style restaurant for six years.
“If I look at any place you will always findsomething,” said Bloch about the inspection process.
Overall, La Creperie was cited for seven violations, none ofwhich were major and all problems were fixed on the same dayaccording to the report.
In March of last year Gordito Burrito located in the UniversityUnion had four minor violations according to their inspectionreport. Among the violations were inadequate hand washing andimproper storage of food.
Java City, which has several locations on campus was cited forhaving “potentially hazardous food” stored at too warmof a temperature. Other violations included an unclean icemachine.
Taco Bell and Togo’s Sandwiches have their combined reportdisplayed for customers to view. The inspection found thatTogo’s was storing a sanitizer container near food or foodequipment.
Mother India received a clean report. Inspectors found noviolations in their location.
Although county inspectors are trained professionals, Sac StateStudents also catch some problems and post their complaints insidea suggestion box located in the Union. One student suggestion wasmade for Round Table Pizza for preparing sodas before they areordered and then serving them to customers with which created awatered down effect.
It is unclear if students ever read the inspection reports ornot. Chris Olvera, a senior at Sac State, said that he never readsany of the reports. Olvera said that he eats at the universityabout once a week.
“(I’m) probably not (going to read the reportsbecause) then I probably won’t eat the food,” Olverasaid.
