Alternative Spring Break planning underway
March 10, 2009
Students looking for a fun, free way to spend their spring break can sign up to participate in the upcoming Alternative Break.
The program connects students at Sacramento State with the community through a week of volunteer activities during spring break.
“It is a great way to meet other students and get involved with the community,” said Brendan McVeigh, Community Partnerships coordinator.
This spring’s activities will run from March 30 to April 3 and will include a day with the Sacramento Food Bank, two days working with Habitat for Humanity and other community based tasks.
Senior liberal studies major Victor Chan has participated in multiple Alternative Breaks.
Chan, an aspiring teacher, said that volunteer work provides “a very gratifying feeling knowing that you have given back to your community.”
Looking back on past Alternative Break activities, Chan said he enjoyed working with Habitat for Humanity.
“I got to build the foundation of a brand new house,” Chan said.
McVeigh said that students from all majors are encouraged to participate in the program. In the past, participants have come from diverse backgrounds, from social work majors to members of athletic teams and campus organizations.
“Community service is fun,” said Terry Martin, senior government major. “It also looks great on your resume.”
Information sessions are being held this week in the University Union Orchard Suite III.
The remaining sessions are Mar. 10 from 12:00 to 12:45 p.m., Mar. 11 from 9:00 to 9:45 a.m. and Mar. 12 from 9:00 to 9:45 a.m.
