Hot hitting Hornets outslug San Jose State to sweep doubleheader
April 14, 2008
The Hornets are playing some of their best baseball at the right time with a 10-4 conference record (15-16 overall) after sweeping the San Jose Spartans in a doubleheader Saturday by scores of 6-3 and 10-9. With the two losses, the Spartans’ conference record drops to 7-11 and 16-16 overall.
In the first game, the Hornets jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, a lead they never relinquished. Junior shortstop Blake Crosby and senior right fielder Brian Boyd both went 2 for 3 with two RBIs in the game.
Hornet sophomore starting pitcher Trevor York (3-4) earned the win as he pitched seven innings while allowing two runs.
The Hornets relied heavily on the seven runs they put up in the bottom of the fifth to beat the Spartans by one run in the second game. Senior designated hitter Wes Oberlin went 3 for 5 and hit a two-run home run, his sixth long ball of the season, in the second inning.
Senior Alvaro Orozco (4-0) earned the win allowing four runs in two innings of relief.
The Hornets will play the Spartans in the series finale at 2 p.m. today at Hornet Field.
