The Sacramento State baseball team extended its WAC Conference winning streak to seven straight after sweeping the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs in a doubleheader Saturday by scores of 13-7 and 6-4.

The Hornets crushed the Bulldogs 17-2 Thursday and Friday’s game was rained out and was not rescheduled. The conference winning streak marks the longest in school history for the Hornets, breaking the old mark of six consecutive wins in the 1998 season when they belonged to the Big West.

The Hornets hit five home runs as a team on Thursday, three of which came off the bat of junior Gabe Jacobo, giving him eight on the year. He also had six RBIs while going 4 for 5 on the day. Senior right fielder Ryan Blair and junior shortstop Blake Crosby hit the other two home runs for the Hornets: Blair’s third of the season and Crosby’s first.

All nine Hornet offensive starters scored a run in the game, while eight reached on base hits as the team went 16 for 35 (.457) during the game.

Hornets’ junior starting pitcher Jose Ramirez (3-2) earned the win, going six innings while allowing two runs on four hits and striking out five Bulldogs.

After being rained out on Friday, the Hornets and Bulldogs were back in action at J.C. Love Field. The Hornets won both games and improved their conference record to 8-3, while their season record moved to 13-15. The Bulldogs dropped to 2-8 in the WAC and their season record fell to 15-14.

In game one on Saturday, the Hornets hit six home runs in the game as Blair and senior first baseman Wes Oberlin each hit two home runs. Both Crosby and senior catcher Travis Kirkman added their second home runs of the season.

Hornet sophomore starting pitcher Travis York (2-4) earned the win, allowing five earned runs on nine hits in six innings of work. Sophomore pitcher Tommy Elrod pitcher three scoreless innings to put the Bulldogs away, earning his first save of the season.

Game two was the closest margin of victory for the Hornets in their three wins against the Bulldogs, winning 6-4. Jacobo hit his ninth home run of the season in the top of the third inning of game two, a solo shot to left field. The Hornets scored five of their six runs in the first three innings and never looked back.

Hornet junior starting pitcher Brian Smith (2-0) was credited with the win as he threw five innings while only allowing three runs and striking out five hitters. Junior pitcher Jeff Roth came in for his second save of the season in an inning and a third of relief, replacing senior pitcher Alvaro Orozco, who held the lead in two and two-thirds innings.

The next time the Hornets will take the diamond will be when they host the San Jose Spartans at 2 p.m. Friday at Hornet Field for the first game of a four-game conference series.
