Sac State Baseball shocks No. 12 Cal Bears in Berkeley
March 19, 2008
The WAC and Pac-10 collided as the Hornet baseball team went to Berkeley Tuesday and shocked No. 12 California by a score of 12-6 at Evans Diamond. The Bears’ pitching staff could not retire Hornets’ senior third baseman David Flores as he put on a hitting clinic, going 4 for 4. He hit three singles to go along with one double – setting the school record for career doubles in the process at 39 – and he also crossed the plate three times and drove in two RBIs.
After scoring two runs in the first inning, the Hornets added six runs in the second inning with the help of RBI doubles by Flores and junior center fielder Tim Wheeler. All eight runs scored in the first two innings were unearned as the Bears made five errors in the game.
Senior first baseman Wes Oberlin added a solo home run in the top of the seventh, his third of the season.
Sac State starting pitcher Cory Weglin allowed only one hit in three scoreless innings before giving way to senior Al Orozco, who worked three and a third innings and earned the win in relief. The win moved Orozco’s record to 2-0 on the season while Bears’ sohpomore starting pitcher Michael Burgary (0-1) allowed five runs and did not make it out of the second inning.
Freshman Trevor Paine and junior Brian Smith combined to record the last eight outs of the game for the Hornets with Smith earning his first career save. The win puts the Hornets’ record at 5-11 on the season while the Bears drop to 13-3-1.
The Hornets will return to host the Gonzaga Bulldogs in a non-conference battle at 2 p.m. Friday afternoon at Hornet Field, the first of a three-game series.
