Late-inning runs help baseball get past San Jose State 3-1
March 24, 2008
Led by a solid pitching performance by junior starting pitcher Jose Ramirez, the Sacramento State baseball team pulled out a win against conference opponent San Jose State Friday night, 3-1. The game was played at Municipal Stadium in San Jose and was the start of Western Athletic Conference play for both teams.
With the win the Hornets improved their season record to 4-8 while the Spartans’ loss put their record at 8-5.
In a game that only saw four runs on 13 hits between both teams, there was no player that had more than one hit. Every Hornet starter had a hit except for senior third baseman David Flores.
Both teams scored one run in the second inning. The Hornets’ run came when sophomore center fielder Tim Wheeler scored on senior designated hitter Jeff Hannah’s single to right-center field. The Spartans scored on junior right fielder Michael Maehl’s sacrifice fly.
The score stayed the same until the top of the ninth when the Hornets scored two runs. Senior first baseman Wes Oberlin scored on a wild pitch and senior pinch hitter Brian Boyd doubled home Hannah.
Ramirez went eight and two third innings and gave way to junior pitcher Jeff Roth who came in for the save, his first of the season. The win moves Ramirez’s record to 2-1 on the season.
