Aggies pound baseball 12-3
March 11, 2008
In the last game of the Fifth Annual River City Classic, the UC Davis Aggies defeated the Sacramento State baseball team 12-3 Sunday afternoon at Hornet Field. It was the Hornets’ third consecutive loss, dropping their record to 2-8 while the Aggies improved to 7-7 on the season.
Hornet senior starting pitcher Cory Weglin failed to make it out of the third inning after giving up six earned runs on seven hits in two and a third innings. The Hornet pitching staff has allowed 23 runs during its three-game losing streak.
“Our starting pitching is getting us in a hole and were having to go to the (bull)pen too much,” Hornet pitching coach Jim Barr said. “Today against Davis we’re getting the ball up (in the zone) too much ? that’s when bad things happen.”
Barr said that it is frustrating to see the Hornet pitchers struggle in game situations because he said they throw well in practice sessions.
“I don’t know if is a matter of they just need to relax a little bit more, or just trust themselves and go out there and do it,” Barr said.
Aggies senior left fielder Kevin James doubled home a run in the second inning and two more in the third inning as UC Davis jumped out to a 6-1 lead after three innings.
The Aggies scored four more runs in the seventh inning to essentially put the game away. Aggies senior center fielder Ryan Royster went 3 for 5 with a home run, two RBI and two runs scored.
Senior starting pitcher Jeff Reekers threw a complete game for the Aggies, giving up three runs on nine hits while striking out four and walking one.
After fouling a ball off of his foot in yesterday’s game against Utah Valley State, Hornet senior right fielder Ryan Blair proved he was okay by going 3 for 4 with an RBI double.
The Hornets’ next game will be against the Pacific Tigers at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Hornet Field.
