The Sacramento State men’s soccer team topped Menlo College Oaks by a score of 4-1 today at Hornet Field.

This is the first victory of the season for the Hornets, improving to 1-7-1, while the Oaks fall to 4-5-0.

The first Hornet goal came from junior Brady Nunes, who was assisted by freshman Ernesto Carranza in the 37th minute of the game. The goal was Brady Nunes’s second goal of the season.

“It was a good run by Ernie and he gave me a great ball right on a dime,” said Brady Nunes, “I didn’t know if I would be able to get to it?I just poked it in.”

Oaks’ sophomore Paul DeFusco scored on a shot outside the 18-yard box to tie the game in the 59th minute.

Brady Nunes’s brother, junior Blake Nunes, scored in the 66th minute on a header assisted by senior Brandon Baggett that regained the lead for the Hornets. The goal was Blake Nunes’s first goal of his Sac State career.

“I had a few opportunities early on and didn’t get to finish them, but I stayed positive and I got one in,” said Blake Nunes.

Carranza scored the third goal for the Hornets on a penalty kick in the 69th minute for his first of the season. Carranza then assisted freshman Fernando Cabadas, who scored his second goal of the season in the 83rd minute.

Hornets’ assistant coach Jason Gantt acted as the head coach for the game because head coach Michael Linenberger was serving a one game suspension for a red card he received in the previous game.

“We are trying to recover from a lot of injuries?today we had a limited roster, we were able to get some guys healthy for next week” said Gantt.

The Hornets will begin conference play in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation next week at San Jose State on Oct. 7th at 7 p.m.

“We’re starting a new season with conference play? we hope we can turn a page and put the past behind us and take this win into the future,” said Gantt.
