With two events already marked off the Homecoming Week calendar, the rest of the week promises more opportunities to draw alumni back to their alma mater and to invite students to partake in Sacramento State’s legacy.

“Homecoming week is a tradition in high school and colleges to bring alumni back onto campus get them with old classmates to see what’s happening with the school and to show spirit,” said Linda Scott of the Alumni Relations Office.

While Homecoming Week is officially Oct. 2 to 7, the first event, the Second Annual Stinger Golf Classic, took place yesterday at the Woodcreek Golf Course in Roseville. The event featured a “Closest to the Hole” contest and an opportunity to win a Mercedes Benz with a hole-in-one. All proceeds went to the athletic teams at Sac State.

The Alumni Breakfast Club with Jerry Reynolds, who is the Sacramento Kings Director of Player Personnel and a member of the Kings Broadcast Network, was held yesterday.

The Golden Grads Reunion Luncheon, which will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. today in the Alumni Center, is designed to honor the first groups of Sac State alumni. The classes of 1949 to 1957 are invited to enjoy lunch over live hit tunes of the ’50s.

Tomorrow’s Homecoming pep rally is the first on-campus event of the week involving students. It will take place at 6 p.m. in Serna Plaza and includes performances by the Spirit Squad, Herky the Hornet (Sac State’s mascot), the marching band and the dance team.

The Homecoming King and Queen will be crowned during the pep rally and each will receive $500 scholarships provided by Associated Students Inc.

ASI President Angela Arriola said ASI joined Student Activities in the planning of Homecoming events to push for more student involvement this year.

“We’re trying to promote the entire week as whole,” ASI Graduate Director Joyce Davis said. “It’s a great opportunity for the community and the university to come together.”

A free, outdoor showing of “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest” will follow the pep rally.

To celebrate the university’s 60th year of instruction and Eli and Edythe Broad’s contribution to Sac State, the Green and Gold Gala, an annual fundraiser, will take place on Friday. The black-tie event, which will include dinner, music and arts, begins at 6 p.m. in the University Union Ballroom. Tickets cost $200 per person.

Homecoming Week will close with the Homecoming Festival, which will take place from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday at the Alumni Center before the Homecoming Game. Students, faculty and the surrounding community are invited to join. There will be food, entertainment and a carnival for children. The event is free other than a nominal charge for hot dogs, hamburgers and drinks.

The football team will take on Weber State in the Hornet Stadium, with kickoff at 6:05 p.m.
