Portland State sacks Hornets at Homecoming
October 9, 2004
For the fifth time in the last six home games, Sacramento State football came up on the losing end Saturday night at Hornet Stadium.
Playing against Big Sky Conference foe Portland State (3-2, 1-1 Big Sky), the Hornets (1-4, 0-2) were shut out for the second straight week, 31-0.
Dating back to the end of the second quarter of the Causeway Classic, the Hornets have been outscored 93-0 in the last two and a half games. They’ve gone ten consecutive quarters without scoring a single point.
Despite it being their Homecoming Game, the Hornets failed to stay undefeated at home in the 2004 season; they won their only game of the season in their home opener.
The visiting Vikings took it to the Hornets from the get go. On their opening drive, Portland State drove 34 yards in 9 plays, ending the drive with a 49-yard field goal from kicker Eric Azorr.
The Vikings put points on the board again ending up with a 16-yard touchdown catch and run by receiver Shaun Bodiford from quarterback Joe Wiser. The short touchdown drive was set up by a 53-yard punt return by return man Brendan Ferrigno.
The Vikings dominated the second quarter of this game, posting 14 of their 31 total points in the period. On their first drive of the quarter, Portland running back Ryan Fuqua ran in a one-yard touchdown on fourth-down and goal.
The Vikings would convert two fourth-down plays and a critical third and long play on the drive. Portland would end the half with another touchdown giving them a 24-0 lead at half time.
Again the Hornets allowed Portland to convert on third-down and long situations. Quarterback Joe Wiser completed two third down passes and the second would be his second touchdown of the game, this one going to Brendan Ferrigno from 7 yards away.
Bad field position doomed the Hornets in the first half. The Hornets average starting field position in the first half was at their own 20-yard line, while Portland’s average drive started at the 50-yard line.
Despite the bad field position, the defense played well except for the third down plays. Portland was 5 of 9 in third down chances, and two of those times they didn’t convert in the first half, they would convert of fourth down.
The second half resulted the same as the past four of halves of football for the Hornets, no points. They would control the ball for more plays and time than Portland State, but the Hornets couldn’t overcome another poor start.
Starting quarterback Ryan Leadingham would throw for 78 yards on 10 of 22 passing. He and backup Brad Tredway would be sacked a combined seven times; this was the second straight week Hornets’ quarterbacks went down in their own backfield seven times.
Senior wide receiver Fred Amey extended his school record for receptions in consecutive games to 36 in a row; every game of his career. He totaled 5 catches for 58 yards.
Sac State again will be at home next Saturday night as it hosts Weber State at 6:05 p.m. at Hornet Stadium.
