February 19, 2003
Hair is an important aspect of life here at Sacrament State. As such, students have to find good, cheap salons to satisfy their follicular requirements.
One such place, Federico (2100 Arden Way), offers various services for cheap prices. Having a history since 1947 as a college of hairstyling, their haircuts are a very reasonable seven dollars and students get 10 percent discounts on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
If you’re wary of their skills, don’t worry, because the school requires students to train at least 120 hours for hair cutting, design, perm and coloring. Also, they have a “redo policy” in which if you are not satisfied with their service, you can return within five days and they will redo your hair after getting approval from their instructor. The school opens from 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tues.-Fri. and from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.
Most of their day students range in age from 18 to 20. “The students are about the same age as Sacramento State students,” said Jimmy Federico, the college manager. “They are friendly and fashionable.”
In addition to their unique services, like chemical reformation for perms at $12 and body spa therapy at $20, they will expand the campus in May. This includes a bar, cafe, fully operational day spa, makeup room and massage room. “The price ranges are about 1/3 to 1/2 of the usual beauty salons,” Federico said.
Entering the Exytt Salon (1928 L St.) means you will leave the establishment looking beautiful. Owner David Caradine, who is 39 but looks 20, named the salon exactly that reason. The salon is open seven days a week from 8 a.m. till the final appointment of the day in central midtown. Caradine shaped the hair of many celebrities in Los Angels for five years, such as Karyn White and other musical groups.
The services are based on quality, actualizing your requests and providing comfort plus relaxation. Haircuts for men are $25 and $35 for women. Many hair salons do not offer black & all extensive hair, but they do have it from $175. Various massages, such as whole body, rear and therapeutic, are $65 per hour, but if you get your hair done in the same day, it’s $55 per hour. You can get 25 percent discounts for first time visits and monthly special discounts for holidays.
The drawing room at Exytt is lazily elegant, looking gorgeous but simple and homey. While waiting, you can relax while watching TV, listening to soothing music, reading magazines and drinking wine, juice, tea or coffee. The hairstyling room is bracing with white and black decorations. In addition to five motivative stylists, one manicurist and two masseuses, a tiny dog named Willow is waiting to welcome you. “We are open to all ethnicities and strive on customer service,” Caradine said.
