Union receives restroom upgrades
September 24, 2002
Broken toilet seats and flooding urinals have become a thing of the past in the University Union.
The summer of 2002 served as the arrival of shiny tile and color-coordinated Hornet tones to match all of the existing restrooms in the entire Union. Since the restrooms were tattered from 27 years of punishment and not compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act, the became a priority.
For the restrooms to be compliant, at least one stall must be wheel chair accessible accompanied by proper railing in the stall. In addition, one urinal must be at a lower height as well as height requirements for the sinks.
Brighter lighting and automatic flushing were also among the list of improvements, giving the students access to cutting-edge toilet technology. With wider dimensions and remote control access to the main restroom entrances, all students can feel when using the facilities.
The improvements came at a cost of nearly $272,000, said to Associate Director of Operations, Donald Tucker. Most of the money came from student fees, with the procurement of the contractors came through the finances of the campus.
“They’re nice. I like the automatic toilet,” said freshman Shelby Baker. Many of the visitors of the restrooms on the first and second floors were fond of the automatic flush because they did not have to touch the toilet. Despite the handy functions and perks of these restrooms, not all students believe that facilities will stay.
Civil engineering major described her typical experiences in Sacramento State restroom as “problematic.” “The times I have used the restrooms, it was like walking through a mine field of paper wads,” said.
Students like feel that others are not inspired by clean facilities to be clean themselves.
Improvements in the University Union are always occurring and students are welcomed to obtain information from the arrangement and schedule board on the third floor next to the elevator.
The board lists the improvements, like the restrooms, that have taken place or that are in the works.
