Volleyball continues winning ways vs. Bengals
October 22, 2001
Sacramento State?s volleyball team lengthened its winning streak to a season-high seven matches after cruising past Idaho State University Saturday at Hornet Gym.
The Hornets dominated the first two games, winning 30-13 in the first and 30-19 in the second game. The Hornets managed to squeeze out a win in the third game with a score of 30-26.
“We knew we could beat them,” said senior Tasman Dwyer. “We were beating ourselves, by making some mistakes.”
Sac State held the advantage in every statistical category in the match from kills (59-28), hitting percentage (.381-.085), assists (52-23) and digs (51-39).
The victory gives the Hornets an 8-1 standing in the Big Sky Conference, with an overall record of 14-5. The Hornets have swept six teams and won 21 consecutive games since their last loss to No. 15 ranked University of Pacific late in September. The Hornets took the No. 1 spot in the conference sweeping Weber State University on Friday.
Sophomore Lisa Beauchene and Dwyer led the Hornets with 14 kills apiece.
Jayme Wright finished with nine kills and a team-high 15 digs. Senior Kelly Voeltz had five kills and 11 digs. Sophomore Kazmiera Imrie contributed with 10 kills and four digs, and Alison Gahr added seven kills and seven digs.
Complementing the 14 kills were Beauchene and Dwyer?s hit percentages.
Beauchene had a percentage of .706 and Dwyer finished with a .700 hit percentage. Imrie had a hit percentage of .500 and Alison Gahr had a hit percentage of .778.
Head coach Debby Colberg said the team is in great shape, but still has areas to improve. She said the team has a strong offense, but needs to work on its blocking.
“We came back (in the third game) because of timely errors from the other team,” Colberg said.
Now that Sac State is on top, every game is more important. “Hosting the Big Sky Conference is very important to our success this season,” said Beauchene.
Colberg said the team is barely ahead in the conference. It will be a tight race ahead with Montana State University, Northern Arizona University and Weber State trailing closely behind them.
Dwyer said her team has a lot of confidence and great chemistry and if the team is focused and works hard it should win.
Dwyer added that the team shouldn?t take their opponents too lightly.
“They don?t want to be here (in the postseason),” Dwyer said.
The Hornets will play again on Thursday at 7 p.m. against Brigham Young University at Hornet Gym. The Hornets will then play at Northern Arizona University Saturday.
