Booters suffer two narrow defeats at Diadora Classic
September 23, 2001
The Sacramento State men’s soccer team gave a heartbreaking performance at the Oregon State Diadora Classic this past weekend.
“We were disappointed with th results, but pleased with our performance,” coach Michael Linenberger said.
The Hornets lost two games by one point, both of which lasted into overtime.
Sac State went into overtime on Sunday against Gonzaga University and double overtime in Friday’s game against host Oregon State University.
Against Gonzaga, both teams watched as minute-after-minute slowly slipped off the clock.
In the first half, goalkeeper Leo Marin had three saves. Although the Bulldogs outshot Sac State 10-5, they were unable to penetrate the Hornet defense.
“The shots were from a distance,” Linenberger said. “We are pleased with our defense.”
In the second half the shot count rounded out, as each team attempted six shots.
Hornets junior David Rios and freshman Patrick Nelle led the way with three shots apiece.
“Rios is finding his rhythm,” Linenberger said.
Junior Hjalti Kristjansson and sophomore David Fraser followed behind with two shots each.
Although Sac State stepped up its play, no shots made it past Bulldogs? Mike McCarthy and the score at the end of regulation time was tied at 0-0.
In the 96th minute, Gonzaga’s Abbas Faridnia capitalized on a penalty kick to give the Bulldogs the win 1-0, upping their record to 3-2-0. Sac State was not able to get any shots off during the overtime period.
“We weren’t dangerous in front of the goal,” Linenberger said.
The Hornets were unable to hang on in double overtime during Friday’s 3-2 loss versus host Oregon State.
The Beavers started off well in the first half of the game, with Ross Duncan scoring their first goal in the 16th minute of play.
“We played well and dominated the ball,” Linenberger said.
Oregon State continued to put pressure on throughout the first half with twice as many shots (6-3) as the Hornets.
The second half was a different story, however.
The Hornets came out fighting as the Hornets senior Sean Luigs scored from five-feet out past the Beavers goalkeeper Peter Hillmeyer in the 51st minute.
The Beavers responded with a goal by A.J. Weber in the 65th minute of the game to take the lead 2-1.
In the 75th minute of play, Luigs tied up the game capitalizing on a penalty kick. Although the Hornets stepped up with 12 shots to the Beavers’ five, the score at the end of regulation was 2-2.
Both Oregon State and the Hornets remained at a standstill throughout the first overtime. Sac State took five shots, but could not make any of them reach the back of the net. At the conclusion of the first overtime, the game was still without a victor.
In the 110th minute of play, the Beavers were given a penalty kick that Oregon State?s Aaron McHurdy shot past the Hornets’ Marin.
This victory was the Beavers first and gave them a record of 1-4. Sac State’s record dropped to 1-3-1.
The Hornets will take next week off and then head to the University of San Francisco to meet the Dons on Oct. 2, the Loyola Marymount University and University of California, Irvine later that weekend.
“We are getting better with every game,” Linenberger said. “We’ll continue doing the things we’re doing.”
