Road woes continue for men’s basketball
March 5, 2007
A dominating performance from the line by the Eagles and a collective no-show from the Sacramento State starters paved the way for an 80-72 win for Eastern Washington on Saturday night in Washington.
The Eagles got to the line early and often on their way to 38 free throw attempts, making 27.
The game was close throughout with the halftime score separating the two by just three points (39-36) in favor of the Eagles.
Had Sac State (9-19, 4-11) had the services of senior forward Alex Bausley for much of the game, the outcome may well have been different. Bausley ended the game with just one point on 0-for-4 shooting in 18 minutes. He was relegated to the bench for much of the game due to foul trouble. He picked up his fourth foul with 16:26 remaining in the second half.
Eastern Washington (15-14, 8-8) was led by NBA hopeful Rodney Stuckey’s 18 points, 10 of which came from the charity stripe. Stuckey struggled from the floor, making just four of his 13 attempts from the field. Center Paul Butorac tallied 17 points and eight rebounds.
Sac State was paced by junior guard Kris Groce’s game-high 19 points on 8-for-14 shooting, including 3-for-7 from long distance. Sophomore guard Loren Leath contributed off the bench with 16 points.
The Eagles outrebounded the Hornets 47-36.
Sac State ends its season with a game against Weber State at 7:05 p.m. on Monday at the Hornets Nest.
