African Student Association hosts ‘American Idol’

The African Student Association is hosting “American Idol” today, an event to increase awareness of on-campus clubs and organizations while mixing in local talent.

The event will be held at 7 p.m. in the Hinde Auditorium of the University Union as a part of the ongoing Black Fall Welcome. It is free and open to the public, however, ASA will be asking for $2 donations or canned goods at the door.

All proceeds will be donated to the Katrina relief effort.

“ASA is excited to host an event like this. It’s a great way to get students involved and it also brings awareness to a great cause,” ASA president, Shade Akinbayode said.

There will be three judges representing three different organizations on campus. They will take on the personalities of the real “American Idol” judges: Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson.Those interested in participating should arrive at 6:30 p.m. Performers need to bring their own music in advance on a CD or pick from the DJ’s song selection. All students are welcome to participate.

ASA strives to create an association intended to unify all people of African minds while socializing all members of the community with African culture and experience.

Also, The National Society of Black Engineers will be throwing an ice cream social at Leatherby’s at 2333 Arden Way on Tuesday, Sept. 10 at 7 p.m. Again, all students are welcome and the first 100 people will receive free ice cream.

In addition, the NSBE will also be hosting an academic mixer Thursday, Sept. 29 in the Delta Suite of the University Union.

This will be a chance for all students to come and meet the faculty, build study groups with other students, and to network with individuals with the same interests.

Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. will be collaborating with Sigma Gamma Ro Sorority, Inc. for the “Indiana Love Game” which will be held in the Student Union Friday, Sept. 30 at 7 p.m.

All members of fraternal and panhellenic organizations and interested students are welcome to come play games, fill out questionnaires and mingle with the different organizations on campus to show unity and cooperation among greek members. It will be the culminating event for the Black Fall Welcome.
