Despite two late rallies in both games Saturday, Sacramento State softball fell to both Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and Fairleigh Dickinson University in San Luis Obispo, Calif.

The Hornets lost to the Cal Poly 6-1 and the Knights 5-3.

Junior Caitlin Brooks pitched six innings against Cal Poly and sophomore Kaitlyn Yerby only lasted five innings against Fairleigh Dickinson, before sophomore pitcher Jennifer Hartman relieved both.

The Hornets could not find the answer to Cal Poly’s pitcher Sierra Hyland in game one.

Hyland held Sac State batters to one run on three hits. Not only did Hyland help on the mound, but she contributed with her bat as well, hitting a two-run home run in the first inning.

Cal Poly would add one run each in the second and fourth innings taking a 4-0 lead. Brooks had an uncharacteristic performance giving up six earned runs on five hits, while issuing eight walks.

Before the seventh inning, Sac State had chances to score leaving six runners on base, four of which were in scoring position. The Hornets scored its only run, when junior left fielder Alexa Chattleton hit a two-out, two-strike single to left-center that drove in junior shortstop Paige Castro.

“We could not get our offense going today at all, we need to score to win,” said softball head coach Lori Perez. “It was a little too late for us by the time the seventh inning came around.”

Sac State was on the scoreboard first against Fairleigh Dickinson after Chattleton tripled to lead off the game. She later scored on sophomore designated player Kortney Solis’s RBI single.

The Hornets, however, could not cross another run until the top of the seventh inning thanks to Knights pitcher Megan Reiner’s ability to limit the damage of Sac State’s bats.

Fairleigh Dickinson scored once in the first and fourth innings giving it the 2-1 lead heading into the sixth. The Knights scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth with a RBI double by right fielder Madison Lerma and a 2-RBI single by catcher Madelaine Wilen.

Sac State would mount a late rally as junior right fielder Paige Martin blasted a two-run home run over the left-center wall. She came into the second game batting 0-for-5 in the previous two. Martin went 1-for-4 against the Knights with two RBIs.

With two losses Saturday, Sac State’s record drops to 8-9 on the year.

The Hornets will finish out the three-day Mustang Softball Classic tournament against tournament host Cal Poly on Sunday at 2 p.m. in San Luis Obispo, Calif.
