Sacramento State baseball was shut down offensively against the University of San Francisco, Saturday at John Smith Field.

The Hornets went 9-for-32 at the plate and had a difficult time scoring in the 9-1 loss to the Dons.

Dons starting pitcher Abe Bobb kept Sac State in check holding them to one run on eight hits in eight innings. It was his second win of the season.

Hornets’ head coach Reggie Christiansen was frustrated with the way his team played.

“We didn’t show up ready to play,” Christiansen said. “I think our guys felt good about themselves and what they’ve accomplished thus far and a team to come into our own park and really kinda stick it to us, it doesn’t feel good.“

Sac State was held scoreless until the bottom of the seventh inning where senior second baseman Scott Loper led off with a double. Loper scored one batter later on a sacrifice fly by senior centerfielder David Del Grande.

Hornets’ junior starting pitcher Ty Nichols came into the game with a 2-0 record having beat Utah and Texas A&M. Nichols was hit hard early giving up four runs in the first three innings. He left the game after five innings, giving up eight runs only five of them earned. He suffered his first loss of the season and now has an ERA of 3.50.

Dons’ centerfielder Bradley Zimmer went 3-for-5 with two singles and a 2-run homerun. Zimmer is the 19th rated prospect in mlb.com’s draft watch.

Returning to the lineup for the Hornets was first baseman Rhys Hoskins, who served as the designated hitter against USF. Hoskins, who was out for three games with an ankle injury, went 1-for-3 with a single.

Sac State will head to San Francisco to take on the Dons for a doubleheader on Sunday. Game one begins at 11 a.m.
