Women’s soccer falls to Weber State
October 12, 2012
Sacramento State’s women’s soccer team felt defeated before the second half today and fell to Weber State 0-2 in a Big Sky conference match up.
The Hornets’ game-defining goal by the Wildcats came five minutes before the end of the first half.
Sac Sate head coach Randy Dedini said the Hornets played well, but after the first goal they appeared to have lost before the entire game was over.
“We didn’t communicate with each other to step to it,” said senior goalkeeper Shelby Tomasello. “The girl just got her foot on it and shot far post, which is the shot she is supposed to take because I am supposed to cover the near post.”
The Wildcats put in its second goal three minutes into the second half.
Tomasello said she started the second half with determination and never lost hope even after the second goal.
The Wildcat forwards were good at moving around and keeping the Hornets on their toes, said freshman defender Kassidy Kellogg.
Kellogg, a native of the WSU area, knew some women from the opposing team because of the hometown connection, which made it a big game for her.
“I came out wanting it, but we just weren’t there together as a team,” Kellogg said.
Dedini also said the team seemed like they were not on the same page and onl some came out to play, while others looked not so ready.
Sac State’s total number of shots was 16 – five over the Wildcats.
Tomasello finished the game with four saves in addition to the two goals against her.
For Tomasello, today’s loss was disappointing because her senior season is winding down, making it a make-or-break pursuit for playoffs.
The Hornets now hold a 3-2-2 record in the Big Sky and have dropped their second place standing.
“Now we have to come back on Sunday and next Friday and we have to win,” Tomasello said. “There are no ifs, ands or buts about it.”
The Hornets will host Idaho State at 1 p.m. on Sunday at Hornet Field.
