Men’s soccer falls to San Jose 2-1 in non-conference game

Sacramento State’s men’s soccer team lost a non-conference match up to Mountain Pacific Sports Federation league opponent San Jose State University with a score of 2-1 Thursday night at Spartan Stadium.
The Hornets started off attacking with two offsides opportunities early in the first half. Junior mid fielder Fernando Cabadas posted Sac State’s first shot at 16:45. San Jose State’s Nick Carrara then got a shot that was saved by sophomore goalkeeper Bryan Oliver. Sac State answered 4:19 later when junior defender Diego Marroquin headed a shot wide.
With 39:43 left in the first period, Sac State’s closest scoring chance came when Max Alvarez was called offsides after his shot that deflected into the net. Two of Sac State’s following shots were broken up by San Jose defenders. For the rest of the half San Jose State and Sac State took turns successfully defending in their own zones, until the half ended in a 0-0 tie.
6:30 into the second half, Sac State’s Ernesto Carranza scored when his shot to the left side of the goal went through San Jose goal keeper Jonathan Lester’s hands. Before Carranza’s goal, San Jose State had gone over 330 minutes without allowing a goal.
Less than two minutes later, San Jose tied the game on a penalty kick goal by Oscar Yniguez. The Spartans would score again on a corner kick that was headed in by mid fielder Nick Cukar.
The Hornets got a couple of late chances, including a final shots by Cabadas and sophomore forward Matthew Tellez, but were unable to come up with the tying goal.
Sac State begins MPSF conference games with a match against Air Force Academy, next Friday Oct. 16 at Hornet Field.
