Women’s soccer dominates Dominican 6-0
September 12, 2009
Sacramento State’s women’s soccer team beat Dominican University of California 6-0, to continue its unbeaten streak, Friday afternoon.
“We didn’t play down to the level of the other team,” head coach Randy Dedini said.
He added that The Hornets continued their offensive attacks after gaining the lead and did well combining passes from the midfielders to the forwards.
Sac State was also successful at turning the ball downfield and was clicking offensively during the entire match. Sac State was able to string enough passes together to create many scoring chances.
“We’ve been doing really well with passing combinations,” forward Elece McBride said.
McBride scored 1 of the 3 first half goals and assisted the first goal of the game scored by defender Kelsey O’ Donnell 10 minutes and 18 seconds into the first half. Midfielder Cori Shreve, Leah Larot and Caitlin Pulver were responsible for the game’s remaining goals. Midfielder Kim Kemper assisted 2 goals and defender Erin Tarantino and Shreve got 1 assist each.
“We have really good chemistry this year and everyone is on the same page,” McBride said.
The Hornets out shot Dominican University 30-7 and nearly every player got a shot toward a Penguins goalkeeper.
“We’re finding those opportunities and taking them,” Larot said.
The Hornets played well defensively, blocking shots in front of goalkeepers Savannah Abercrombie and Mandy Trojan, as well as keeping the ball away from their net. The Hornets goalkeepers faced only 1 shot each in 45 minutes of play and did not allow a single goal.
The team’s next game is against a faster paced opponent in the University of the Pacific, Friday Sept. 11 at 4:00 p.m. So far this season, Sac State has proven they can take a lead early and hold on to it.
“We played our style of soccer and didn’t let the other team control the game,” Larot said.
