Men’s soccer shut out William Jessup 8-0

Sacramento State’s men’s soccer team defeated William Jessup University with a score of 8-0 Friday evening. The Hornets scored the most goals against an opponent since Sac State won against Pacific Union 20-0 Sept. 24, 2006.
After a slow start, The Hornets picked up their game play with a few early chances. The team scored its first goal at 30:31, when a cross from sophomore mid fielder Adam Bettencourt was headed by senior midfielder Scott Crandall and kicked in by freshman forward David Norton.
“We came out and we knew we wanted to beat them by a large margin. I thought we did a good job of coming out and playing hard,” Norton said.
Sac State’s second goal came off a corner kick by junior midfielder Fernando Cabadas was headed in by sophomore defender Bryan Baker. Raul Rodriguez scored another goal for Sac State, assisted by Norton, 4:30 before the end of the first half.
The Hornets would go on to score five more goals during the second half. Freshman forward Max Alverez scored two goals, including an unassisted shot from 25 yards out.
“We possessed the ball better in the second half and that’s when all the goals came. (In the second half) we created chances and took advantage of those chances to score goals,” Alverez said.
Senior goalkeeper Nick Gargiulo had to make only one save and faced a total two shots. The Hornets out shot William Jessup 33-2.
Next up for the men’s soccer team is Sunday’s game against UC Davis.
“We’re hoping this game will give us a little bit of confidence,” head coach Michael Linenberger said. “After not scoring any goals the last three games and dropping three in a row?It’s nice to win.”
