Season ends for men’s basketball with 89-69 home defeat to Weber State
March 7, 2008
The Sacramento State Hornets were blown out at home 89-69 in their final game of the season Monday night against the Weber State Wildcats.
“The emotional game we had in (UC) Davis, and to come back and to play right away, we just didn’t quite have the energy tonight,” coach Jerome Jenkins said
“I give Weber State a lot of credit,” he said.
The match-up was meaningless in terms of conference positioning since the Wildcats had secured the third position in the Big Sky Tournament and the Hornets were eliminated from conference play.
The Hornets had a 10-point lead early in the first half, but that lead slowly dwindled as the half went on. The half ended with the Hornets having a two-point lead (37-35).
As the second half started, the Wildcats had an 8-0 run to take the lead in the opening minutes (45-37). That lead would continue to grow as the half continued and the Hornets managed to score only one field goal in a 10-minutes span.
The Wildcats were up by as many as 24 points.
The Hornets were only able to get within 15 points with senior forward Justin Williams’ jumpshot with 1:21 left in regulation.
Senior Wildcats forward Arturas Valeika almost out-rebounded the Hornets by himself with 20 rebounds against the Hornets’ combined 24 rebounds, and he also added 10 points and six blocks.
Junior forward Daviin Davis scored a team-high 22 points for the Wildcats.
This was also the final game for three seniors for the Hornets: guard Clark Woods and forwards Justin Williams and Jason Davis.
“We want our seniors to go out with a bang; unfortunately, we weren’t able to do it,” Jenkins said.
Three of the four Hornets players who scored in double figures were seniors.
Davis, who led the team with 17 points, shot 90 percent from the free throw line (9-10). His average on the season was 45 percent.
Woods was not far behind in scoring with 16.
“I’d rather lose by 20 than lose a close game by two or one,” Woods said.
Williams added 12 points in the contest. Junior guard/forward Donald Thomas had 11 points.
“It’s a sad day being my last day as a Hornet, but I know that I have something else coming for me in the near future,” Williams said.
Both Davis and Williams had their best seasons this season as Hornets.
“I’m always sad to see my seniors go; every year I’m sad to see our seniors leave,” Jenkins said. “All three of my seniors are ready to go out into the real world now.”
