Police: Woman shot identified as Sac State student
November 14, 2007
An unidentified 19-year-old woman who was allegedly shot multiple times by her ex-boyfriend over the weekend is a Sacramento State student, confirmed Davis Police Department Sgt. Scott Smith.
The woman is in stable condition after undergoing two surgeries Saturday, Smith said.
“I think she’s doing pretty good,” Smith said. “She took several bullets to the body. It’s pretty traumatic, but she seems to have come out of (her two surgeries).”
Prior to surgery, the woman identified her alleged attacker as Julio Cesar Guevara Mejia.
The Davis Police was contacted early Saturday morning after an employee at the Motel 6 on Chiles Road in Davis heard a woman’s screams and several gunshots, Smith said.
A male bystander who was coming out of a nearby restaurant yelled at the suspect to let the woman go, Smith said. Mejia released the woman for some time as he fired at the bystander, missing.
After the witness escaped Mejia’s gunfire, he told police that Mejia proceeded to walk back into the motel room. He then heard four or five gunshots.
After the gunfire, Mejia got into his older Toyota Camry and left the motel, Smith said. The vehicle was later recovered.
Smith said the woman appeared to be set up because she initially went to the hotel to meet an acquaintance and had no knowledge that her ex-boyfriend would be there.
Police are not releasing the woman’s name because the case involves domestic violence.
This marks the second time in as many consecutive semesters that a Sac State student was shot. In May, a stray bullet hit and killed student Kebret Tekle as she waited in a car just off campus.
