Sac State athletes fitted by students

Sacramento State students are knowingly or unknowingly donating money toward the athletics department. Terry Wanless, athletics director, said a minimum of 70 percent of the athletics budget comes from university support and student fees. Pat Worley, the executive director of Associated Students Inc., said $60.50 from each students fees, each semester goes toward the athletics program. That money is taken from the Student Body Association fee paid at the time of enrollment. “I didn’t know my money was going toward the athletics department,” said Becki Neal, a 23-year-old junior. Wanless said that money, along with donations and ticket revenues, are formed into a lump some and used for a variety of different things at the coach’s discretion. There are 20 athletics teams on campus, that benefit from the lump some of money, Wanless said. The athletics department sets parameters for each coach, as to when and on what the coach can spend the money on, said Wanless. Uniforms are an important part of a collegiate team, and Wanless said a three year time frame is set before the team gets new uniforms, but the uniforms might last longer. Sweat, wear and tear and washing can wear the uniform out preventing it from lasting the three years, Wanless said. Although some teams like golf, tennis and volleyball get new parts of their uniform regularly Wanless said. Sac State athletics is in its second year under contract with Nike, who fit’s the teams with its apparel, Wanless said. “Our kids enjoy being fitted with Nike uniforms,” Wanless said. “It helps with the recruiting process as well.” The athletics department is going through a logo change, adding to a possible constant change in parts of a Sac State team uniform, adds Wanless. Charlie Tarnowski, a 19-year-old sophomore, believes the money used for the athletics department from his students fees is acceptable. “I think it’s good, it goes toward the college experience and athletics is part of that,” Tarnowski said.
