Trustees vote to give Gonzalez, 27 other CSU executives raises
September 25, 2007
The California State University Board of Trustees voted today to give 28 of its highest ranking executives pay raises, according to a California Faculty Association press release.
All 23 campus presidents including Sacramento State President Alexander Gonzalez will receive raises, as will CSU Chancellor Charles B. Reed and four other executives.
The raises come at a time when CSU compensation practices are being audited by the state, according to the press release.
Vice President of Public Affairs Frank Whitlatch said the increases were part of a long-term plan to address salary lags for all CSU employees.
“There will always be people who complain when an executive or president gets a pay raise,” Whitlatch said. “The board has done what it feels is right.”
Whitlatch said that, on average, most presidents were given raises of about 11.8 percent. He said that with the increase Gonzalez’s pay will go from $265,225 a year to $295,000.
“To put it into perspective, the new Dominguez Hills president was hired in at $295,000…more than many sitting presidents,” Whitlatch said.
Gonzalez was unavailable for comment.
