The Used: Berth
February 27, 2007
“Berth,” the new CD from The Used, features a two-in-one package of nine tracks along with a new DVD that keeps fans posted on the most recent tour experiences of the band.
The live recordings of The Used open with the song “Take It Away.” “Take It Away” is one of the band’s last radio hits off of their album, “In Love and Death.” These tracks consist of other favorites including the first song ever written by the band, “Maybe Memories.” “Maybe Memories” was featured on their first album. With touching lyrics and hard riffs The Used produced a breathing replica of what it is like to hear them live in an arena. Comments made by the singer before songs pump up the crowd and will make you feel like throwing down head bangs while lip syncing with the vocalist, Bert McCracken.
Both heartfelt and hardcore melodies synchronize their music into an “emo-like” composition of brilliant and heavy music.
The Used is signed with Reprise Records and this is their fourth album to hit the shelves. These four heavy metal boys are not the only great band signed with Reprise. Other hard mainstream bands like HIM, Mastodon, Slayer, and Taking Back Sunday are all signed with the record company.
McCracken’s colorful character is greatly revealed in the included DVD. The clips show more than you may want to see, like McCracken eating someone else’s boogers. Live bare-butt clips of the band are part of the many flashbacks of the crazy experiences the boys had on tour.
Like an MTV reality show, each member of The Used speaks about personal details on the tour bus and on the stage. A healthy serving of laughs and jaw-dropping clips make this DVD worthwhile. Fast shots of the band live on stage and the in-betweens like McCracken’s case of diarrhea while on the road in Tokyo make this DVD amusing.
The DVD also includes clips of other bands including Linkin Park and Korn. The Used shows a side of them outside of what their fans see on stage. It shows their struggles in the studio and the different approaches they take while recording.
Random locations like the beach or in a tunnel are where the band is inspired the most and where they are able to put real emotions into their music.
If you want to really catch this hardcore crew live they will be included in the Taste of Chaos tour on February 23 at Sacramento’s Arco Arena. “Berth” is currently in stores.
