COSTLY TRIP: Tahoe weather conditions
February 24, 2007
A string of storms dropped nearly 19 feet of snow at elevations above 7,000 feet and 6 1/2 feet at lower elevations in the Reno area just before the New Year. Meteorologists said it was the most snow the Reno-Lake Tahoe area has seen since 1916.
When the latest storm hit, the Reno region had still been digging out from the New Year&s storms that dumped as much as 4 feet of snow at Tahoe City.
The Lake Tahoe Basin was under a winter storm warning through New Year’s Day, leaving many drivers stuck on the roads and many skiers with no open runs.
Since then the skiing conditions have been phenomenal; however, much of the powder from the storms is gradually being packed down. All ski resorts in the Sierra&s are reported to be open with very few runs not active. A new storm is expected within the next two weeks providing skiers with an even better terrain.
In Truckee, snow is expected to fall today and possibly again on Friday. Cloudy skies with temperatures in the upper 30s and lower 40s are expected through Monday. Clear skies are expected through early next week, with a chance of heavy snowfall expected next Thursday night into Friday morning.
