Ninth-ranked Santa Clara too much for Hornets

Santa Clara snapped Sacramento State volleyball’s season-high six-match winning streak 3-1, (30-26, 30-22, 31-33, 30-22) on Tuesday in its home opener after an 11-match road trip.

The ninth-ranked Broncos were led by Kim McGiven and Anna Cmaylo who tallied 40 of Santa Clara’s 73 kills.

Santa Clara tallied more kills (73-57), digs (87-70), and assists (73-54) than Sac State, and held the Hornets to a season low .120 hitting percentage. Head coach Debby Colberg said that this match was more to see how the Hornets could compare to the Broncos.

“We have a lot of respect for that program,” she said. “They force you to make adjustments and we were getting frustrated with making them.”

Santa Clara held the lead throughout most of the match, but Sac State rallied back to a 14-all tie in game two, just to see it disappear after a 7-0 run by the Broncos.

Junior middle hitter Michelle Franz could tell that Sac State’s chemistry was off.

“We were up and down and that’s why we didn’t win,” she said. “The times we were up we were beating them.”

The Hornets held its largest lead in game three (12-7), but the Broncos responded with a 11-4 run and took over the lead 18-16. Atlee Hubbard, who led Sac State with 21 kills, made the match point with a block from Jennifer Ferguson to take the game 33-31.

As in game one, Santa Clara dominated in game four to improve to 10-2 and Sac State fell to 10-4.

Franz, who is ranked 10th in the nation in blocks, recorded a match-high seven blocks, eight kills and .316 hitting percentage. Junior Lindsay Haupt had 13 kills, and senior Kristin Lutes had a team-best 20 digs.

The Hornets host 25-ranked Long Beach State Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Nest.
