Crowd clashes on campus

Before Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and state Treasurer Phil Angelides debated head on at Sacramento State, their supporters rallied outside Capistrano Hall to voice their opinions about the gubernatorial candidates.

Separate signs showered the grass area outside of the debate venue for each candidate.

Upon Angelides’ arrival at the hall around 4:40 p.m., his supporters chanted, “Go, Phil, Go.” The voices rang through the campus, reaching the entrance of the campus’ University Union.

Gov. Schwarzenegger’s supporters responded to the opposing party’s chants with, “Four more years, four more years.” The opposing rally immediately responded, “No more years.”

The opposing parties were separated by a sidewalk, as a number of law enforcement looked on. Chants began to die down as Angelides walked into the building.

About an hour later, the crowd made its way to the Capistrano Hall entrance that faces Parking Structure I for Gov. Schwarzenegger’s arrival.

Angelides supporters began yelling, “Veto Arnold.” As the governor’s car drove up to the building, his supporters began to cheer and yell “four more years,” as his opponents booed.

Angelides supporters actively spoke out against the incumbent governor and what they say is his lack of educational support.

“Angelides has been a good leader,” said David Siedenwern, an Angelides supporter. “He promotes a college education.”

“Angelides supports my education,” said Monika Robbins. “If Gov. Schwarzenegger keeps raising (university) fees, I can’t afford it.”

However, one supporter of Schwarzenegger believes California is in the right hands.

“I’m an Arnold supporter, and I think that the state is on the right track,” said Lee Chapman, CEO of Chapman Music Marketing. “As we move on, we’ll be stronger with Arnold than with Phil.”
