Big Sky can’t handle the Hornets

Sacramento State’s volleyball team swept the Montana State Bobcats for the second time in Big Sky play on Thursday.

The momentum wasn’t going towards the Hornets (22-4, 9-0) in the first two games as the Bobcats (6-13, 2-8) dominated as a defensive team.

“They are a defensive team and we get the big kills, but it takes some time,” middle hitter Lindsay Haupt said.

Even though the Hornets had more kills (40-33), digs (44-42) and a better hitting percentage (.208-.180) than the Bobcats, Sac State committed nine attack errors in game one and added five more in the second, along with two service errors. The Hornets were also behind in team blocks with only four.

“We came out shaky,” Haupt said. “It wasn’t the volleyball we normally play. “We’ve had better nights,” senior Kristin Lutes added.

The Bobcats held a five point lead with a 24-19 score in game one, but senior Atlee Hubbard recorded a kill, which began a Sac State six-point run.

“I didn’t think I was hitting that good, but everything was going my way,” Hubbard said of her 19 kills and .516 hitting percentage.

Montana State tacked on a few more points, but the game went to the Sac State 30-27. The second game seemed to be a repeat of game one. The Hornets began the match 7-2, but fell behind as senior Angela Wiege led her team with seven kills throughout game two.

The Bobcats built up another impressive four-point lead at 20-16, but senior Shannon Roland helped put the Hornets back in the groove with back-to-back points. With a 28-28 tie, junior Haupt and Roland sealed the deal as Sac State won 30-28. The Hornets dominated game three, which featured a rare Kristin Lutes kill, as they held a 22-14. Sac State took the game 30-19.

The team will take on Weber State at 7 p.m. on Saturday at the Hornets Nest.
