Tego skins: A unique gift idea
December 17, 2006
If you’re sick of how boring your cell phone looks and hate how every device seems to come in neutral colors, look no further than www.mytego.com for myTego, an online company that offers personalized skins that you can apply on a variety of cell phone models, mp3 players and other electronic devices.
The company claims on its website: “We are the first company to offer a product that changes with your tastes and reflects who you are and what you like. You can now put any picture or graphic onto your device with our new and unique custom skin covers, the Tego!”
The Tego skin is a thin vinyl adhesive that you can apply by simply sticking it on your device and remove by peeling it off. Each skin ordered comes with instructions and a kit for the application/removal process. Unfortunately, while the skin can be removed, it cannot be reused.
The skin is said to be durable, water-proof and can protect devices from scratches. It is made to completely cover devices, leaving only the keys/buttons and screen exposed. For cell phones and mp3 players, the Tego skin is expected to last from up to six to nine months. For game consoles and laptops, it is said to last years.
By visiting the website, you can design and order a skin. The website allows you to preview how a skin might appear on any given device before ordering. You can choose from the company’s own library of images, anything from the American Flag, coffee beans, a magazine cover featuring Angelina Jolie or the Last Supper painting.
Unfortunately, the image library is not extensive nor does it offer very many choices. This is probably because the company specializes in custom designed skins and customers are encouraged to use their own images. If you want to take that route, you can upload your own photos and use them as skins. Now your dog, significant other or favorite band can grace the surface of your Gameboy. You can even upload your own designed graphic or illustration.
Once you have chosen an image, you can position it on an illustrated template of a specific device. You can choose where to put it and how wide you want to zoom in. Each side of the device can be designed individually so you can pick different images.
In addition to an image, you can add text to the skin, perhaps overindulging on personalization by typing your name.
Prices vary depending on what electronic device you want a skin for: $12 for a palm style cell phone and $10 for a flip style; $12 for a portable gaming device or console; $12 for an mp3 player; $15 for PDAs and other electronic organizers and $12 for laptops. You can only order online and there is a shipping and handling fee of $3. You should receive the skin in about two weeks.
The Tego skin could be that affordable and unique gift you’ve been looking for – just make sure you know the exact make and model of your recipient’s device. Many brands and models are supported and an extensive list is available on the company’s website. For cell phones, manufacturers included are Samsung, LG, Motorola and Nokia. Brands for mp3 players include Apple iPod, Dell DJ and Creative Zen Micro. Models for gaming devices include Nintendo Gameboy, Sony PS2 and Microsoft Xbox 360. Laptop brands mainly included Apple and Dell. If you don’t see your device’s make or model listed, you can request it on the website and the company will try to have it available in two weeks.
