Basketball signs guard
April 18, 2006
Men’s basketball continued a trend last week with the signing of 6-foot Chris Hart.
The Hornets signed four guards last season, and now, with the signing of Hart, they have inked two more for next season.Hart, a guard, averaged 10.8 points and 3.7 assists last season at Long Beach City College.
“He played on a fairly good team last year,” coach Jerome Jenkins said. “When he got in he changed the complexion of the game.”The team looks now as if they are filled in at the guard and swingman positions.
The Hornets have already signed 6-foot-5 swingman Tristan Wilson of Apollo High School in Glendale, Ariz. Jenkins said he hopes Wilson will be able to produce right away.
“I would like him to come in and play right away,” said Jenkins, who did not rule out redshirting Wilson. “We want to get everyone in here and let them compete (for spots).”
The signing of Hart and Wilson, coupled with Kris Groce’s first year of eligibility after sitting out a season because of NCAA transfer rules, Sac State now has just two players on the roster more than 6-foot-6, junior Randy Adams and freshman Stephen Colvin, who was a redshirt last season.
Jenkins said recruiting size is more difficult, but that the team is now looking in that direction.
Last season, Jenkins would often go small, playing junior Davon Roberts (6-foot-6) or junior Justin Williams (6-foot-6) at center. That strategy took the Hornets to a 15-15 record along with a first round playoff win in the Big Sky Conference Championships.
The Hornets were last in the conference in rebound margin at minus-six, but were first in turnover margin last year.
The Hornets lost three of their four tallest players at the end of last season with the departure of Chris Lange (6-8), Aaron Perry (6-8) and Zane Beekman (6-9).
