Summer Issue: Summer movie reviews
May 26, 2005
Movie box office numbers have been down the past few weeks, despite the release of several excellent films such as Sin City and Kung Fu Hustle, which arrived with much fanfare, only to be quickly forgotten by the public. That is why Hollywood is banking on the big summer blockbusters to bring people back to the theaters, and there are definitely a few movies being released that any action fan should check out.-
Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith
Release: May 19
The final chapter in George Lucas’ Star Wars saga will finally show Anakin Skywalker’s transition from Jedi to Sith as he turns to the Dark Side of the Force, eventually becoming Darth Vader. This movie is more action-packed than the previous sequels, and the brutality of the light-saber battles have earned it a PG-13 rating, as opposed to the previous PG ratings for the series. Does this mean people finally get to see Jar Jar Binks die a gruesome death at the hands of the Sith?-Batman Begins
Release: June 15
After director Joel Schumacher’s atrocious Batman & Robin in 1997 — incidentally starring our Governator as villain Mr. Freeze — the Batman movie franchise was itself put on ice, with doubts as to whether another installment would be made again.
However, with the recent success of X-Men and Spider-Man, faith in comic book-based movies has returned. Now, with the director of Memento at the helm, an all-star cast and American Psycho actor Christian Bale as the Dark Knight, the Batman franchise looks to return to its former glory with Batman Begins.
The story behind Batman Begins is much darker than the series’ previous films, focusing more on how Bruce Wayne became Batman. Unlike the eccentric enemies in past films, such as the Joker and the Riddler, the ninja cult leader Ras Al-Ghul and the twisted doctor Jonathan “The Scarecrow” Crane are the enemies Batman faces against in this film.Land of the Dead
Release: June 24
It’s been 20 years since George Romero released his last installment in the Land of the Dead series, and its influence on horror films and entertainment has been numerous. From the popular Resident Evil game series to the chilling 28 Days Later and the hilarious Shaun of the Dead, many movies, television shows and video games pay homage to Romero’s story of hordes of zombies and the people who try to survive them.
Now he returns to the genre he created with Land of the Dead, which follows the events that occurred in his previous films. Zombies have now overrun the world, and the few remaining survivors have retreated to a protected city. Mercenaries are sent outside to take care of the zombies who are becoming a greater threat.
As a bonus, try to find Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright, the star and director of Shaun of the Dead, who have cameos in the new film.
